Umahi defends action, says August Meeting not usually held in town
Aggrieved women in Ebonyi State, under the aegis of Ebonyi Federated Women Organisation (EFWO), Saturday, petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) and other human rights organisations over the disruption of their August Meeting by Ebubeagu operatives.
The women, made up of Umuada Ebonyi Women, Ebonyi Widows Forum, South-East Women Association and Female Ministers of Urban Women Organisation, among others, said that Ebubeagu operatives invaded the venue of their meeting, People's Club premises, along Abakaiki/Enugu Expressway and disrupted them.
The women also revealed that their seats, canopies and even decorative items were confiscated by the operatives and taken away to their office in Abakaiki, the state capital.
They disclosed this during a protest over the incident in Abakaiki the state capital, noting that the theme of their disrupted meeting was "Women, Nation Builders".
Speaking on behalf of the women, President of Umuada Ebonyi Women, Mrs. Charity Chukwuemeka, described the incident as sacrilege and an attack on Igbo women and Igbo culture and urged the IGP and human rights organizations to call the security operatives to order.
She said, "The hard-working, peace fostering women of Ebonyi State under the aegis of Federated Ebonyi Women Organization, were on this day 20th of August 2022, unjustifiably attacked, embarrassed, and chased out of the venue of their 2022 Annual August Meeting slated to hold in People's Club Hall, Abakaliki.
"This abominable act was carried out by the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi, through his attack dogs, the Ebubuagu Security outfit of Ebonyi State.
"It is not new or alien to the Igbo race that the entire women meet every August to discuss and chart the best possible developmental ideas and projects to improve the well-being and welfare of our people.
"Notably, the Annual August Meeting is not a partisan gathering as it cuts across party lines and even involves women who never belonged to any political party.
"It is surprising therefore that the Governor knowing the importance of this annual gathering for the women and the society at large, facilitated this dehumanizing attack on this year's August Meeting that has the approval of all relevant security agencies.
"That these attacks are unreasonable and unwarranted infringements on the constitutional rights of the women of Ebonyi State which must not be tolerated.
"That as mothers, we will speak to our sons and husbands to be in solidarity by standing with us in this protest against dictatorship.
"That for unjustifiably attacking and humiliating our women in this sacrilegious manner, Ebonyi women hereby call on the Inspector-general of Police and civil rights groups to come to our aid by ensuring that Governor Umahi's agents whom he used to perpetrate these crimes are brought to book while Umahi's militia known as Ebubeagu Security Network should be disbanded by the federal government," she said.
When contacted on phone, Special Security Consultant to the State government, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, said the operatives received a security report that unknown gunmen will use the place to attack the state.
He said that August meetings were not usually done in the town and vowed that those arrested will be prosecuted.

Emmanuel Eze, a father of three from Ohabuenyi village, Okposi Okwu community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resident in Lagos State with his family, was upbeat that his business trip to Onitsha, Anambra State, on June 4, 2022, would be a successful outing.
In fact, he had promised his wife that he would reveal the nature of the business to her once he returned from the journey.
However, that was not to be, as Daily Sun gathered that, six weeks after, the 35-year-old businessman was yet to return to his base in Lagos and his whereabouts remain unknown. Eze’s two mobile phone lines have remained switched off since the second day of his journey, with no clue of what might have happened to him.
His elder brother, Ogbonnaya Eze, a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), told our reporter that his sudden disappearance has thrown their family into confusion.
He said his brother went on a business trip from Lagos to Onitsha and was last heard from the next morning, when he was scheduled to meet a friend in Enugu State.
Ogbonnaya explained that his missing brother was into foodstuff business in Lagos and had always sourced goods from the northern part of the country. He wondered the kind of business that brought him down to Onitsha that he did not confide in any members of the family, including his wife.
Ogbonnaya said: “My brother, Emmanuel Eze, came to Onitsha from Lagos for business on June 4. He spoke with his wife in the morning of the following day. He said he had lodged in a hotel in Onitsha. He also called his friend in Enugu and informed him that the business he came to do in Onitsha was not successful. He also said he was leaving the hotel to go down to Enugu to meet his friend, one Onwe Samuel. That was the last time anybody saw or heard from him.
“We reported the matter to both Enugu and Anambra police commands and we have searched for him in all police and army detention facilities in and around Onitsha, without any trace of him.
“Samuel, the friend he was supposed to meet in Enugu, confirmed that he called him and said that he would be coming down to Enugu to see him but he did not visit again as he said. Samuel also confirmed that it was in the morning that he called him, and when he did not see him in the evening he tried his lines but they were all switched off.”
Daily Sun gathered from a family source that investigation by security experts indicated that his two telephone lines went off at the same time between Asaba and Benin-Lagos road on June 5, 2022.
Ogbonnaya appealed to the public to contact the family or the police with any information regarding his brother’s whereabouts and how to rescue him. He said the entire family was traumatized, and his wife, who is pregnant with their fourth child, has been having sleepless nights since the incident.
On her part, wife of the missing man, Mrs. Blessing Emmanuel, said her husband only told her that he would be going to Onitsha for business but did not disclose the nature of the business.
“He told me a day before the trip that he would be going to Onitsha for business. I was surprised and immediately I asked him what kind of business he was going to Onitsha to do, knowing full well that the foodstuffs he sells were usually sourced from the North. But, to my greatest surprise, he answered that he would tell me once he returned from the trip. Daily sun
He raised this question in a post via his Instagram on Tuesday.
He asked, “Will any of these students currently on ASUU strike totally ignored by this government still vote for the current political party in the coming elections?
“I'm just asking respectfully. Or will they forget? Will they be brainwashed? Will they be bought because of the hunger deliberately created in the land? Or will they be brave enough to try something new and different, for a new and different result. I'm just asking.”

But in an Instagram Live session with Daddy Freeze after the news of the singer’s arrest by the Tanzanian police went viral, the show promoter, identified Steve claimed Vado refused to perform because the luggage containing his other gold chain was delivered.
According to Uwah, although Kizz had a gold chain on his neck, yet he refused to perform because the airline had failed to deliver his luggage that contained his other gold chains; insisting he must wear all of it for the show.
He noted his manager, Paulo called the singer from America, crying while begging him all night to honour the show but he refused to bulge.
Explaining reason for Kizz Daniel’s refusal to perform at the concert to Daddy Freeze, Uwah stated: “He only said the airline did not bring his bag, that is why he cannot perform because his gold chain is not there and he had a good chain on his neck, one but he wanted everything.”
“And I brought him harmonised skin. I brought in different clothes. So, he said just because the airline didn’t bring one of his bags, he cannot perform without his gold on his neck.
“That show, I spent nothing less than $300,000 because the show was a premium show. I’ll send you a video of that show. That show wasn’t a joke. A table for that show was sold for $5,000 and the highest table was sold for $10,000.

Man who raped and killed Akwa Ibom job seeker, Iniubong Umoren, sentenced to death by hanging
Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court today August 4 sentenced Uduak Akpan to death by hanging for the murder of Iniubong Umoren.
Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo, who was killed in April 2021 by Akpan. The deceased was job hunting while awaiting mobilization for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme when she encountered Akpan who feigned he had a job for her. On getting to his apartment, Akpan raped her and then killed her.
During the trial, Akpan confessed to committing the crime.
"I first used condom to have sex with Iniubong Umoren and later removed the condom because I did not enjoy the sex.
She became infuriated and I reached out to a stabilizer and a box iron and used it to hit her abdominal part and she started to bleed. I hit her again and she screamed. I used her jean trousers and strangled her and she became lifeless....he said
While delivering judgment, the judge said the prosecution has proved beyond doubt the case of rape and murder against Akpan and found him guilty. The judge, however, discharged and acquitted the father and sister of Mr Akpan, who were the 2nd and the 3rd defendants in the case.
After the judge read out the judgment, the convicted rapist attempted to escape from the courtroom but was overpowered by security officials.
Late Umoren went missing on April 29 April 2021 after she was lured out of her home in Uyo with a fake job interview by Uduak Akpan. Umoren had told her friend, Uduak Umoh, of the job interview. Uduak who raised alarm after failing to establish contact with Umoren said she heard her scream for help when she last spoke to her on the phone.She sent me a 1sec audio record on WhatsApp and I had to call her back to know if she wanted to say something to me but immediately I called her, I heard her screaming,” Ms Umoh had tweeted during the search for Umoren
Investigation by the police led to the recovery of late Umoren's body in Akpan's family compound on April 30, 2021, a day after she was raped and killed by Akpan
According to the spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspect robbed the women of their 3 iPhones 12, 2 iPhones 11 Pro Max, 1 iPhone XR, one Nokia phone, one wristwatch and one gold necklace, with a total value of N2,368,000, after he lured them to a hotel, where he laced their drinks, resulting in their falling into a deep slumber.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect has no fixed address but lures women to different hotels where he drugs and robs them clean. Investigations further reveal that he has robbed over thirty women since he ventured into this crime.
However, Benjamin revealed that the stolen items have all been recovered from the suspect before he could dispose of them. He added that investigations were ongoing to apprehend receivers of stolen items he works with. Suspects will be arraigned at the end of investigation.
The morgue, Prince ‘O’ Mortuary located in Ndiolumbe community, was burnt down yesterday by the angry mob following several accusations of missing organs of the dead bodies deposited in the mortuary.
Also, corroborating the story, Mr. Ubani Dannie, the Youth leader of Ukwa la Ngwa Cultural Group, in a Facebook post revealed that the incident took place in his constituency.
"In my constituency of Isiala Ngwa South, an angry mob went beserk yesterday destroying a morgue", Ubani wrote on Facebook.
According to him, "the morgue, Prince ‘O’ Mortuary located in Ndiolumbe Abia, incurred the wrath of the irate youths for allegedly indulging in the sacrilege of harvesting organs of the dead. Consequently, the youths burnt ambulances."
Meanwhile, the Police in Abia is yet to comment on the issue as calls and messages sent at remain unanswered.
